The Building Making course engages with the transformation of architectural intent into constructed built form through a rigorous exploration of technical resolution, material systems, and procedural frameworks. Rather than approaching building making as a linear progression from design to execution, the course positions it as a complex, iterative process shaped by interdependencies between drawing, material behaviour, structural logic, and site-based practices.
A central emphasis of the course lies in the detailed development of architectural proposals. Students are required to resolve their projects through comprehensive construction documentation, addressing aspects of structural systems, assembly of building components, threshold and enclosure conditions, and the integration of services. The primary school project done in the building systems course served as operative grounds.
The production of drawings is extended beyond representation to function as instruments of coordination and decision-making. This includes the preparation of specifications, bills of quantities, and cost estimates, enabling students to engage with the economic dimensions of construction.
Through this, design decisions are situated within practical constraints, foregrounding the relationship between intent, feasibility, and resource allocation. The introduction of Building Information Modelling (BIM) through REVIT further expanded this framework.
